However, the announcement has reignited an old controversy concerning the inspiration behind Aamir Khan’s character, Phunsukh Wangdu. Speculation has surged following social media posts by actor Omi Vaidya and the prolonged hunger strike of Ladakh-based environmentalist and social worker Sonam Wangchuk. Many have suggested that the character of Phunsukh Wangdu was based on Sonam Wangchuk’s life and work.
Addressing the claims at the London Indian Film Festival, Aamir Khan categorically denied any connection between the character and Sonam Wangchuk. He stated that neither director Rajkumar Hirani nor writer Abhijat Joshi knew about Sonam Wangchuk while scripting the film. "When the movie was made, I did not know Sonam Wangchuk. The video shared by Omi is misleading. This story has no relation to Sonam," Aamir clarified.
Despite Aamir’s denial, some netizens remain skeptical. An old episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati has been resurfaced, wherein Sonam Wangchuk mentioned meeting Aamir Khan in 2008, fueling further debate over the character’s origins.
