The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have verified the authenticity of a widely circulated photo showing a semi-naked and blindfolded Palestinian man restrained to an iron rod, according to a statement reported by RT. The image, which emerged in late June but gained significant attention this week, has sparked widespread condemnation and renewed scrutiny of alleged mistreatment in Israeli detention centers.

The unsettling photograph depicts the man lying face down on a military cot, blindfolded, with his hands tied behind his back and an iron rod fastened from his feet to his neck. He is stripped down to his underwear. The circumstances leading to his detention remain unclear. The photo originally appeared on a now-deleted social media account with a Hebrew caption meaning "good morning" and was later publicized by a Palestinian activist known as Tamer, who alleged the detainee was captured by soldiers from the ‘Netzah Yehuda’ battalion operating in Gaza.

In response to inquiries, the IDF acknowledged the picture's legitimacy, stating, "The incident does not align with IDF values and regulations. An inquiry is underway, and those involved will be dealt with in accordance with the findings."

Human rights organizations have weighed in heavily. Oneg Ben Dror of Physicians for Human Rights Israel told The Guardian that the image corroborates thousands of testimonies from Palestinian detainees describing torture, labeling Israeli detention facilities as "torture camps." Meanwhile, Sari Bashi from the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel condemned the treatment, emphasizing that holding and photographing a detainee in such a vulnerable state violates international law. Bashi added that sharing sexualized images of detainees constitutes a form of sexual violence and may amount to a war crime.

Following the photo’s viral spread, at least two women identified the man as their missing sons. Rana Abu Nasser claimed the detainee was her son Osama, who was reportedly detained in March near the Israeli-imposed Gaza border along with his one-year-old child.
